Interview with Rory at Salty Sea Dogs Triathlon 7th July

The Salty Sea Dogs Triathlon is our Saturday morning beach triathlon that takes place on Boscombe seafront on two Saturdays during the Summer. Our first one this year was a super success, and we have another to sign up for on Saturday 4th August.

Inspired by his two friends running the Distance Sprint for charity, Rory Moore, his brother and his father signed up for the early start, Rory racing a Super Sprint triathlon for the first time. The Salty Sea Dog kicked off at 7am after a quick briefing, with both distances on the beautiful sandy beach front ready to start the day with a sea swim. The sea temperature was a balmy 18°C and the sun was rising, warm already despite the early hour.

First out the water was Zac Cloete, the youngest competitor but the fiercest with 1st place in each of the three stages of the Super Sprint. The Super Sprint triathlon is great for all ages and perfect for novices looking for their first race. For those wanting more of a challenge the longer Distance Sprint Triathlon, with a 750m swim, 23km cycle and a 5km run, is great for athletes wanting to keep sharp mid season.

For Rory, as a triathlon first timer, finishing with a time just under an hour was very respectable. He even beat his Dad who races regularly, making his day after enduring the last section of the triathlon with gritted teeth, finding the run 'a bit grim'. Despite that, Rory said he'd be up for another one, but he'd need a beer first.

Sign up for the next Salty Sea Dogs Triathlon here. Spaces are limited to 250!

One of the great reasons to get into trail running is all the beautiful places that you get to train and challenge yourself in, and for many, this means the wilder the better. Nowadays, we have a plethora of digital navigation tools at our fingertips which offer downloadable maps and GPS so we can find our way in the wilderness. But smartphones are often useless out in the sticks: Batteries die, screens break, signal fades.
